Radiotherapy planning involves a consultation, preparation of the treatment plan and the treatment appointments themselves. These do not necessarily happen on the same day. This guide concerns external-beam radiotherapy; other forms of radiation treatment may have different arrangements and instructions. First, confirm the exact method being proposed.
Before treatment, the team reviews your history and establishes the area to be treated. During a planning appointment, often called simulation, imaging and positioning are used to prepare treatment. Supports or a fitted mask may help reproduce the position. The NCI external-beam radiotherapy guide explains these preparatory steps.
Ask how many visits are expected before the first treatment and when the plan is likely to be ready. Tell the radiation oncologist about any previous radiotherapy and request the records they need from the earlier hospital. “I had radiation years ago” is a starting point, but the team needs the available technical documentation.
Mention difficulty lying still, pain, restricted movement or significant anxiety before positioning equipment is prepared. Ask how to communicate discomfort during treatment and how staff will explain instructions if you do not speak their language. Raising a concern early gives the team an opportunity to discuss support.
Obtain written instructions about eating, drinking, clothing and preparation of the treatment area directly from your clinicians. Requirements depend on the planned treatment, so another patient’s routine may not apply. When arranging oncology treatment, request translated instructions and establish who can check your understanding of the steps before each visit.
The radiation oncologist determines the number and spacing of appointments. The time the beam is on is only one part of a visit: registration, preparation and positioning also take time. Ask for an approximate appointment window and the process for changes. If radiotherapy is combined with another treatment, identify who coordinates both calendars.
Choose transport for repeated journeys, considering the department entrance, stairs and opportunities to rest. Check accommodation extension terms before booking. Discuss a companion’s help according to your circumstances and the team’s advice, without assuming that you will feel the same on every treatment day.
Ask when the doctor reviews treatment tolerance, where to report new symptoms and what to do if an appointment is missed. The department decides the subsequent schedule; patients cannot make up a missed treatment independently. Keep the clinical advice contact separately from the appointment booking number.
Before planning your return home, establish the final assessment date, records you will receive and the next follow-up. NCI explains that external-beam radiotherapy itself does not make a person radioactive. Instructions for other radiation methods need separate confirmation. This information supports organisation of care; it does not determine your technique, number of treatments or individual restrictions.
