A normal-looking colonoscopy does not settle every cause of persistent watery diarrhoea. If microscopic colitis is being considered, the important question is whether appropriate tissue samples were taken and interpreted. A careful review can identify missing evidence before deciding whether another procedure is needed.
Ask whether the statement describes the appearance of the colon during the procedure, the pathology result or both. NIDDK: Diagnosis of Microscopic Colitis explains that the colon lining often looks normal in microscopic colitis and that diagnosis involves examination of biopsies. A photograph showing no obvious inflammation does not substitute for the tissue report. Conversely, persistent diarrhoea alone does not establish this diagnosis.
Request the pathology report linked to the colonoscopy date. If the report is missing, ask the performing hospital whether samples were taken and where they were sent. Do not assume that the word “biopsy” in a price package means tissue was collected from the relevant bowel sites. Let the specialist decide whether the documented sampling answers the question.
Describe the duration and pattern of diarrhoea, weight change and previous investigations. Bring a dated medicine list and explain whether symptoms began after a treatment change. The clinician may also consider other causes with similar symptoms. Do not stop prescribed medicines because you have read that a drug can be associated with microscopic colitis; ask the treating teams to review relevance and alternatives.
If tissue already exists, ask whether a pathology review would help. If another colonoscopy is proposed, request a reason: missing samples, inadequate information, a new symptom or another clinical concern. The purpose should be explicit. A repeat may be justified, but it should not be automatic solely because the first procedure occurred abroad.
Ask for the final diagnostic wording and the plan for treatment response and follow-up. The gastroenterology route can help direct records for an assessment in Turkey, with individual services confirmed. Seek prompt local care if diarrhoea causes marked dehydration, bleeding or significant deterioration. A useful review closes the gap between the endoscopy appearance, the biopsy findings and the symptoms.
